I created this project out of a deep need to step away from the hustle and get back to drawing for drawing’s sake. I dreamed up my dreamiest itinerary to spend days discovering life’s happenstance moments that are so beautiful they scream out to be drawn. Scream! I wanted to capture that beauty, show you what I see and remind us all of the world’s magic. The last time I did a daily drawing project of this scale was 2016, One Year of Buildings. Since then I have drawn many places for friends, clients, and I truly love it. There’s so much joy, satisfaction and connection in creating images for people to remember a place or a person or a time.But before this trip my drawings felt stiff and the lines felt stilted, not as alive as they have once been. Drawing requires relaxing into it, giving up control and just being an instrument. That’s when lines and brushstrokes have life and feeling. This project is a return to the powerful tool of a long-term daily project, like a shock to the heart and a dose of growth hormones. 200 Days is about time, the most critical resource accumulated for this project. Real weeks-stretched-out-in-front-of-me kind of time to rest, explore and most importantly play. I played with lines, color, and composition—and I also played with ambling walks to nowhere, discovering moments in the street and finding the best latte in walking distance. 200 Days is about freedom. A freedom I wish for everyone, where you can experience life’s simple joys and pursue the things that grip your heart. --- Day 1 was February 5, 2024 and Day 200 was August 22, 2024. The show includes large and small oil paintings, watercolors and colored pencil works.&nbsp; The trip took me through my past: where my family comes from, where my parents began our family, where I grew up and went to college. The fine print collaged into this painting reads, "To pass New Deal legislation, FDR needed the votes of the Southern congressmen and senators, who agreed to support the economic reform only if it excluded African American’s access to the new social programs. Without access to these programs, African Americans were unable to pull themselves up and out of poverty in the 30s and 40s at the rates whites were able to. The Federal Housing Administration, a New Deal program, insures loans for homes, and until the 60s openly discriminated against Blacks and Latinos with clauses in home deeds called restrictive racial covenants that forbade resale of property to ‘any person not of the Caucasian race’. Racial covenants allowed the US govt to invest in the welfare and success of white communities. Anderson was the Black high school in East Austin, known statewide for its excellence. It was also the civic center for the East Austin community. In 1971 it was ordered closed by a federal judge who ruled for desegregation. Despite the neighborhood protests, the high school closed. This plot of land was a Black-owned park established in 1907 as a place to celebrate Emancipation Day. In 1938 white men in the government used eminent domain to “legally” acquire the property to build these projects. She is curious about place in how it lives in our memory and emotions, and how every bit of our world holds a story. Over the past 10 years, Jessica has explored place and infrastructure through projects like One Year of Buildings, where she created a daily watercolor drawing of a building everyday for a year, and The Roadtrip Show, a 5-week, 5,000 mile journey through places of her past and present that spawned 60+ artworks. Jessica is trained in graphic design and spent years in Austin designing for agencies and startups, while also working as an illustrator for local and national clients. During this time she created the One Year of Buildings project, which now has become a visual record of 2010s Austin that is quickly disappearing. This work in particular opened her up to questions and themes she pursues in her work today: why cities are shaped the way they are, who was here before and why are they gone?
